Summertime Blues

This summer has been one to remember. On the literary front,  The Wrath of Monsters released in June. That was the high point of the summer and, indeed, the year. Much of the summer was spent moving to a new house and dealing with the stress that entails. The elder son started playing for a new soccer team, which only added to his anxieties and means a lot more commuting to and from practices.

Summertime also means no school. Personally, I wish there was year-round school. The boys vehemently resist doing any schoolwork to stay up on their academics, will pull out every trick in the book to avoid going to summer camp, and can only be trusted at home together without parential supervision for short periods of time. All in all, it's not a fun time of the year.

Summertime Highs

I've already mentioned that The Wrath of Monsters entering the wild is pure awesomeness. But there's been some other good things this summer. I love birds, and a lovely bird-watching location is an easy walk from the new domicile.

Basically, we live in the middle of everything and near nothing… except for some pretty fine hiking spots. Great trails are only about 30 minutes away by car!

And the older boy is fitting in on his new soccer team just fine, establishing himself as a starter and scoring scads of goals. The younger boy is busy practicing his soccer to prepare for playing with his new rec team in a few weeks. He's gone from decrying soccer as stupid to wanting to follow in his big brother's footsteps—at least, for the moment! On top of that, the younger lad is slowly becoming a less reluctant reader, which might be the best outcome of all.
