Pen and journal

For the past year or so, I've been mining the Internet for writerly quotes that I find particularly interesting or inspiring. Here, I have collected some of my favorites.

"You don’t start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it’s good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it."
- Octavia E. Butler

There is so much truth in this quote from Octavia Butler. She's also a fantastic writer. Recently, I read her civilization collapse sci-fi/dystopian Parable of the Sower. It is absolutely haunting. If you haven't read it, you should.

“Perseverance, secret of all triumphs”.
- Victor Hugo

I can't think of a better quote to encapsulate my writing journey. Grit, hard work, and determination trump everything when it comes to succeeding in writing and publishing novels.

“Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working." – Henri Matisse

I find this is just as applicable to writing as it is to painting. Inspiration and creativity flow from performing the work. I suspect this is where many struggling writers (and other creatives!) misstep. They pine for inspiration to strike like a lightning bolt hurled by Zeus on Mount Olympus instead of grinding day after day.

"Writing is its own reward."
—Henry Miller

I can't think of a better way to stay motivated than this quote from Henry Miller.

That's it for this post. I might add a few more favorite quotes in a future blog. In the meantime, please share your favorite writerly quotes in the comments.
